Hello, I'm Martha Tsihlas and my studio is located in Austin, Texas. I have been a quilter for 15 years but my love for fabrics and sewing started long before that. As a young child my mother allowed me to “play” with her sewing machine, with only one warning: “keep your fingers away from the needle”.
I put together all kind of things, like small blankets and clothes for my dolls. And, as a teenager, I had a small business selling basic tops with matching belts.
I wish I could claim that I come from a generation of quilters but that is not the case. However, I do have an artistic family. Two of my sisters are successful artists. They chose paper, paints and brushes as their media. I chose fabrics and thread.
Knowing how to sew, and my love for fabrics took me in the direction of quilts. While living in Pennsylvania I decided to learn the art of quilt making. I took several classes, attended every quilt show available and read as many books as I could on the subject. This is how I got started.
.
In 2003, while living in Chihuahua, Mexico, I taught a beginners class for piecing, quilting and appliqué. I got a lot of satisfaction from having introduced 15 wonderful Mexican ladies to the art of quilt making and hand appliqué. And as it often happens, once they took to making quilts they haven’t stopped.
Making quilts is my artistic outlet and I will continue creating quilts, taking lessons and experimenting with different techniques.
